Alan Wake is a psychological action thriller from Remedy, the legendary and renowned developers of highly successful action titles. Gamers assume the role of Alan Wake, a best-selling suspense author who escapes to a small town to recover from the mysterious disappearance of his fiancée.
Set in the deceptively idyllic town of Bright Falls, Washington, Alan Wake immerses players in an intense and expansive cinematic world that enables players to roam freely in hyper-realistic, dynamic and interactive environments. Alan Wake is mission-based with a deeply engaging and suspenseful story line unveiling new twists and profound character revelations at every turn. Players will unravel the riveting plot through multilayered character interactions, unique problem-solving and intense combat against terrifying enemies. In this nightmarish world, Alan Wake must use a variety of weapons to survive, including his most powerful ally against the creatures of darkness light itself.
- Intense psychological thriller: Alan Wake delivers a deeply psychological and finely crafted plot that raises the bar for storytelling in video games. The riveting story of "Alan Wake" is propelled by a movie-like atmosphere, compelling situations, memorable characters and real-time pacing. Remedy has a record of creating and developing games with unique cinematic presentation and exceptionally high production values.
- Light as a combat element: As Wake journeys deeper into the mystery of Bright Falls, the shadows close in around him. When darkness descends, light becomes his only ally as he fights his way to daybreak. . This poses a severe problem for Alan Wake since his enemies seemingly gain strength from the shadows, and before long, light itself becomes his greatest ally. Players must skillfully combine their use of light with more conventional weapons to stand a chance.
- Realistic, interactive environment: Set in the town of Bright Falls, the hyper-detailed environments of the Pacific Northwest play an important role, even the change in daylight and weather will profoundly affect the characters and enemies in "Alan Wake." The game's advanced rendering engine provides amazingly realistic environments that bring this world to detailed life - from the lush forest of evergreen trees to the quaint small-town buildings and streets. The world of "Alan Wake" is alive and real.
- Episodic narrative: The mission-based structure of "Alan Wake" creates an episodic narrative similar to a deeply structured dramatic television series, such as Twin Peak and X-Files. As the episodes progress, gameplay will evolve to introduce new elements and characters, escalating the level of threat and action in the game.

On the plus side it looks pretty decent. Now on with the negatives.....
Having 5 years in development you would at least think they could create a memorable game. It's repetitive, lacks any type of real scares, has laughable facial animation, constantly unfair AI (I must have been axed in the back 20 times now with no effort on the games part to draw attention to the enemy), a camera that REFUSES to stay where I repeatedly asked it to be and worst of all a central character who you feel absolutely nothing for. Alan Wake is the most mundane and down right boring 'hero' I think I've had had the mis-fortune to play. The narration running through the entire game stinks as well.
Another middle of the road 360 title advertised as AAA by Microsoft. Don't believe the hype.
Avoid.
If your sick of pretty much only being able to play some sort of modern day war shooter on your Xbox 360 like me and are a fan of truly stunning games, then get Alan Wake. It is the greatest game i have played on the 360, the story is award winning not just for a game but just on how original and compelling it is. I honestly couldn't put this game down , it's sad when today's market is full of copy cat shooters that get all the praise, when it's games like Alan Wake that should be leading the pack. I urge you to buy this if you even remotely enjoy playing video games.
This plays like a cross between an adventure game and a shooter, with the focus on the moody, atmospheric story. It's like a Stephen King movie in the shape of a game, so there are plenty of tense moments and sharp shocks as enemies suddenly reveal themselves nearby. There are not many story choices - unlike say Mass Effect 2, where you can shape the story a little- but the voice acting is great and it's a wonderful frame for the action. I loved the premonition elements as you find pages of the novel which tell you a bit more about what's going to happen.
The game elements are nicely judged, the mechanic of "light = safe, dark = bad" fits the story well, and the auto-save works nicely, you don't often get put back more than a few minutes if you die.
Excellent game, well worth playing and a bit different as an experience compared to Halo / MW2 / etc.
